Seif al‑Islam el‑Qaddafi killed in Zintan
Seif al‑Islam el‑Qaddafi, the 53‑year‑old son of former Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi, has been killed in the western Libyan city of Zintan. Reports say four armed men stormed his home, disabled surveillance cameras, and shot him. His political adviser Abdullah Othman confirmed the killing, while Libyan authorities have not yet released an official statement.
Conflicting details around the killing of el‑Qaddafi
Different accounts describe a similar sequence. The attackers entered the property, neutralised security systems, and executed him inside the residence. Family members referred to him as having “fallen as a martyr.” The identity and motive of the gunmen are unknown. His lawyer Marcel Ceccaldi said there had recently been warnings about threats to his safety.
Reminder of el‑Qaddafi‘s political role and influence
He held no official post under his father. He was widely seen as the regime’s number two. He acted as a key negotiator with the West in the 2000s. He earned a PhD from the London School of Economics. andAdditionally, he was once considered a modernising face of the Libyan state. His influence collapsed after the 2011 uprising, when he promised “rivers of blood” against rebels. He was later wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity.
A decade in Zintan and political ambitions
After being captured by militias in 2011, he spent years imprisoned in Zintan. This before being released under an amnesty in 2017. He remained based in the area and attempted a political comeback in 2021. He announced a presidential run before elections were postponed. Analysts say his death will shift Libya’s election dynamics by removing a major point of contention in the political landscape.
