Severe floods have occurred in northern Morocco. They have displaced more than 50,000 people. This happened after months of heavy rainfall and rising river levels. The Tanger Tetouan Al Hoceima region is among the worst affected areas. Authorities say the flooding was made worse by controlled releases from the Oued Makhazine dam after it reached full capacity.
Communities cut off as rivers overflow
Large parts of Ksar El Kebir have been evacuated. Officials banned entry into the city as rising water from the Loukkos River spread across several neighbourhoods. Power cuts have hit many areas and schools stay closed until further notice. Access is limited to outbound traffic only.
Emergency teams are struggling to reach some flooded towns as persistent rainfall continues. Civil protection units and army teams have deployed helicopters, medical units. They are using rescue boats to support evacuations. They are also working to reinforce flood barriers.
Temporary shelters set up for displaced families
Authorities have begun setting up hundreds of tents near Larache. The site can hold around 3 000 tents and is being connected to water, electricity and sanitation networks. Many evacuees are staying with relatives while others have moved into shelters created by the government.
More evacuations are underway near the Sebou River. Weather services forecast more rain and strong winds. Heavy snowfall is expected at higher altitudes. Officials say the heavy rainfall has ended a seven-year drought but created new risks as dams reach full capacity.
