Renewed British Interest in Libya
The Libya Energy & Economic Summit (LEES) 2026 will host a UK-Libya Roundtable in Tripoli from 24 to 26 January. The Libyan British Business Council (LBBC) and the UK Embassy in Libya organize the event. It comes as British firms step up investment in energy and infrastructure. The LBBC says it aims to “facilitate market access through trade delegations, regulatory support and strategic engagement with Libyan institutions” (Energy Capital & Power). Notably, the UK-Libya Roundtable LEES 2026 event marks a significant milestone in the ongoing partnership between the two countries.
bp and Shell Return to Libya
British major bp is preparing to drill Libya’s first deepwater exploration well in the Sirte Basin with operator Eni. The well will target gas prospects at 1,900m water depth. bp is also planning onshore exploration in the Ghadames Basin after qualifying for Libya’s first licensing round in 18 years. These moves align with the National Oil Corporation’s goal of reaching two million barrels per day by 2030. In addition, activities related to UK-Libya and LEES 2026 are closely intertwined as energy investments progress.
Shell is also back. The company is conducting feasibility studies at the Al-Atshan field near the Algerian border and reviewing assets that need modernisation. Both bp and Shell signed memoranda of understanding with the NOC in July 2025. The purpose is to redevelop fields and reopen permanent offices in Tripoli (Reuters).
Trade Confidence Rising
UK-Libya trade reached £2.5 billion in 2025, reflecting renewed confidence. The roundtable at LEES 2026 will provide a structured forum to consolidate this momentum. Delegates will explore opportunities in upstream, midstream and infrastructure projects. Furthermore, the UK-Libya Roundtable, part of LEES 2026, will reinforce confidence in future economic collaboration.
