Telecom Namibia will invest more than N$2.3 billion to modernise and upgrade its national telecommunications network over the coming years. The company confirmed the plan as part of a major programme. This programme aims at improving broadband quality. It also focuses on strengthening national fibre links and preparing the market for advanced mobile services.
The investment will expand fibre‑to‑the‑home and business connectivity. It will strengthen the national fibre backbone and upgrade mobile networks from 3G to 4.5G while preparing for 5G. The company will also boost its international capacity through the Google Equiano undersea cable. Funding will further support billing platforms, cybersecurity systems, cloud services and backup power solutions.
Tariff changes to improve affordability
Telecom Namibia will introduce a tariff rebalancing structure from 1 February 2026. The company said most prices will decrease. Local call rates from fixed lines to mobile phones will fall from N$1.29 to N$0.90 per minute. Standard TN Mobile rates will drop from N$1.45 to N$0.90. International call prices will also fall sharply for destinations like the United States, Australia, Kenya and Portugal.
Fixed broadband customers will see some of the largest reductions. Old 10 Mbps plans priced between N$909 and N$1,225 will be replaced with new packages costing between N$407 and N$534. Customers will also gain access to higher speeds of up to 500 Mbps. Telecom Namibia has simplified its product range by merging residential and business packages into a unified structure.
Supporting Namibia’s digital economy
Chief executive Stanley Shanapinda said the investment and new pricing model have specific aims. They aim to support the country’s shift towards a digital economy. He said the company wants to improve affordability and reliability while supporting national Vision 2030 goals. The upgrades will strengthen both urban and rural digital access and improve long‑term competitiveness.
These investments form part of a broader five‑year national upgrade programme first introduced in 2022. The plan seeks to modernise fixed and mobile infrastructure. It aims to improve digital adoption. This ensures that Namibia keeps pace with growing telecom demand. Earlier phases included the co‑landing of the Google Equiano cable in partnership with Paratus to boost international connectivity.
