At least eleven police officers have been killed in a jihadist assault in eastern Burkina Faso, according to security sources. This underscores the continued insecurity facing the country despite claims of territorial gains by the ruling military authorities. The attack took place over the weekend in Balga, a locality in Gourma Province in Burkina Faso’s East Region. This is where a police detachment came under heavy assault by armed fighters.
Jihadist assault on police in eastern Burkina Faso
Security sources said several hundred militants were involved in the raid on the police position. Seven officers were killed during the attack, while four others later died from their injuries. The Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims claimed the attack the same day. This group is known as JNIM. It is an armed group linked to Al Qaeda. JNIM has carried out repeated assaults across Burkina Faso’s eastern and northern regions.
Following the attack, police units withdrew from Balga to the nearby town of Diapangou, according to security officials.
Burkina Faso junta maintains silence on casualty details
Under new directives issued by the security command, the bodies of the fallen officers were buried at the scene. They were not transported to urban centres, including the capital Ouagadougou. Authorities have restricted the release of detailed casualty information in recent months.
The ruling junta is led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré. It has reduced public communication around jihadist attacks. The government maintains that their forces have regained control of large parts of the country since the 2022 coup.
Rising violence across Burkina Faso
Burkina Faso has been battling an insurgency linked to Al Qaeda and Islamic State affiliated groups since 2015.
Despite intensified military operations and regional security initiatives, violence has continued to escalate. Conflict monitoring group ACLED provides an estimation. They report that tens of thousands of civilians have been killed since the conflict began. Many security personnel have also died. More than half of the fatalities have been recorded in the past three years.
The eastern region, where the latest attack occurred, has become a frequent target. Jihadist groups are seeking control over supply routes and rural zones.
