Firefighters in South Africa’s Western Cape are battling to contain wildfires burning east of Cape Town. Strong winds and dry conditions fuel rapidly spreading flames across the Cape Winelands. The blazes flared up again on Tuesday. This has forced emergency crews to suspend aerial firefighting operations. It has also raised the risk of evacuations in parts of Franschhoek and surrounding farming communities.
The fires are burning in mountainous terrain near Franschhoek. Gusty winds of up to 50 kilometres an hour have intensified conditions. These winds have carried embers across dense, highly combustible vegetation, including eucalyptus forests. Fire services say the wind is making containment difficult and grounding helicopters that would normally be used for water bombing.

Crews from the Cape Winelands District Municipality have been working extended shifts. Teams are supported by CapeNature and Fire Protection Association. Their goal is to protect farms and prevent the fire from moving closer to residential areas.
Officials have warned residents that firefighting operations lead to heavy smoke. Air quality will deteriorate across parts of Franschhoek and neighbouring towns. Vulnerable residents have been advised to stay indoors where possible. Authorities say they will issue evacuation orders if conditions worsen.
Winds hamper firefighting efforts
Firefighters say steep terrain and strong, shifting winds are among the biggest challenges facing crews on the ground. In some areas, flames have jumped natural fire breaks. Wind-driven embers ignite new hotspots. This forces teams to constantly reassess containment lines.
