African Union UAE Talks Signal Stronger Strategic Cooperation
The African Union Commission held high-level talks with the United Arab Emirates in Addis Ababa. The goal was to deepen cooperation on peace, development, and technology. The meeting brought together AUC Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and UAE Minister of State Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan. The talks built on earlier political consultations from September 2025 under a 2019 Memorandum of Understanding. Both sides reaffirmed a shared commitment to stronger political dialogue and long‑term cooperation.
The agenda centred on Agenda 2063. Both parties highlighted the importance of the Silencing the Guns by 2030 initiative. They also emphasized the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). They stressed that peace and economic integration are closely linked. Durable stability is needed to grow trade, attract investment and support inclusive development across the continent.
Technology and Innovation Emphasised in African Union UAE Talks
The discussions celebrated the UAE’s launch of the 1 billion dollar AI for Development initiative. This was unveiled at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg in November 2025. Leaders said the initiative could boost Africa’s digital transformation through innovation in public services, education and emerging technologies. They described the programme as a tool to advance Africa’s development priorities.
Technology is increasingly seen as a pillar of Africa’s long‑term economic resilience. The AUC and UAE both indicated interest in supporting capacity building. They are also interested in digital skills and policies that link innovation with economic diversification.
Water, Peace and Regional Stability Dominate the Agenda
The leaders also discussed peace and security in the Horn of Africa. They noted strong links between stability in the region and security in the Arabian Gulf. Maritime security emerged as a shared concern due to its impact on global supply chains and regional trade. Water and resource stress were highlighted as cross‑border issues that shape long‑term peace and development.
On Sudan, both sides called for an immediate humanitarian truce, a permanent ceasefire and unhindered humanitarian access. They stressed accountability for violations of international humanitarian law. They reiterated support for an independent civilian‑led government. This government should reflect the aspirations of the Sudanese people.
