China has warned against any foreign interference in Tanzania following the country’s disputed 2025 elections. The message came from Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during an official visit to Dar es Salaam.
Wang congratulated Tanzania’s government on what he called the successful conduct of the polls. He expressed China’s confidence in Tanzania’s institutions and leadership. He also reaffirmed China’s support for the country’s sovereignty and internal decision making.
Tanzania’s election saw President Samia Suluhu Hassan remain in power with 98 percent of the vote. Many opposition candidates were barred from taking part. Rights groups and observers raised concerns about fraud and violence. Opposition parties claim that security forces killed more than 2,000 people during the post election crackdown. China did not comment on the reports of violence.
China has invested heavily in Tanzania over the past decade. Trade has increased and hundreds of Chinese backed projects have been registered in the country’s special economic zones. During the visit, Wang said China would deepen cooperation and continue supporting development initiatives.
After leaving Tanzania, Wang is expected to continue his Africa tour in Lesotho.
