By Newz.Africa, News Desk |20 March 2026 | Johannesburg, South Africa | CAF appeals panel irregularities
The Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) appeals panel is facing scrutiny after concerns were raised about the legality of a recent ruling. Allegations suggest the panel did not meet quorum requirements, with absent members and one participant reportedly ineligible to serve. The issue has drawn attention across the continent due to its implications for governance and credibility in African football.
The controversy has quickly become a focal point in African football, drawing attention from clubs, officials, and supporters who rely on CAF’s appeals process to uphold fairness in the sport. Questions about quorum and eligibility are not just procedural details; they strike at the heart of institutional credibility. With the Africa Cup of Nations and other continental competitions carrying immense cultural and economic weight, any perception of irregularity threatens to erode trust in CAF’s governance. The matter now stands as a test of transparency and accountability for one of Africa’s most influential sporting bodies
What’s Happening
According to public commentary by political figure Floyd Shivambu and corroborating posts by other observers, the CAF appeals panel, formally composed of nine members, issued a decision in a complex case with only five members present. Of those, one was allegedly no longer eligible to participate, while four members were absent from the session. The claims highlight procedural irregularities that could undermine the legitimacy of the ruling.
CAF itself confirmed earlier this week that its Appeals Committee upheld a protest lodged by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, ruling that Senegal’s national team had effectively withdrawn from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final. As a result, Morocco was awarded a 3–0 victory and crowned champions. The decision has intensified debate, with critics arguing that the irregular composition of the panel undermines the legitimacy of the ruling and raises broader governance concerns for African football.
Newz.Africa Analysis
The allegations point to a structural weakness in CAF’s appeals process, where quorum rules and eligibility criteria are central to ensuring fair adjudication. If decisions are taken without full compliance, they risk being challenged not only by affected parties but also by wider stakeholders in African football.
Such irregularities could erode trust in CAF’s governance framework. Clubs, national associations, and players depend on transparent and credible dispute resolution mechanisms. A perception of procedural shortcuts or lapses may undermine confidence in CAF’s ability to manage disciplinary and regulatory matters effectively.
The controversy also highlights the broader issue of accountability in African sporting institutions. Governance failures in football can ripple outward, affecting sponsorships, fan engagement, and the reputation of African competitions on the global stage. Ensuring procedural integrity is therefore not just an internal matter but one that impacts Africa’s standing in international sport.
Looking ahead, CAF may face pressure to review its appeals processes and strengthen oversight mechanisms. Clearer enforcement of quorum rules, transparent communication of panel composition, and timely disclosure of decisions could help restore credibility. Without such reforms, disputes may continue to cast doubt on the organisation’s legitimacy.

The best ruling should be a repeat of the tournament just from the start because it was one of the most corrupt ever since. The referees, CAF board, supporters, the host officials everything was just fraud.
