A team of Gambian engineers, electricians, and captains has completed specialist technical training in the Netherlands. They are preparing for the arrival of the country’s new green ferry.
The training took place at Damen Shipyards in the Netherlands. This is where the vessel was constructed. The training was part of a capacity‑building programme. This programme was organised by The Gambia Ferry Services (GFS).
According to GFS, the programme was designed to familiarise the local crew with the ferry’s core systems and components. This training allows Gambian personnel to manage operations and maintenance once the vessel enters service.
Gambia green ferry training: Focus on technical self‑sufficiency
GFS Managing Director Fabakary Manka said the specialised training would reduce long‑term operational costs. It would limit reliance on foreign technicians for routine maintenance. It would also limit technical interventions.
He added that building domestic technical capacity was a key priority as the country modernises its maritime transport infrastructure.
The trained personnel include engineers, electricians, and vessel captains. They are expected to form the core operational team for the new ferry. This team will take action once it arrives in Gambian waters.
Gambia Green ferry training expected to strengthen transport services
The new green ferry is set to bolster The Gambia’s existing ferry fleet. It will improve transport services across key river crossings used for both passenger and commercial traffic.
The vessel is part of a broader effort by the Gambian government, the Gambia Ports Authority, and GFS. They aim to improve reliability, safety, and efficiency within the country’s ferry services.
Appreciation expressed for government support
GFS expressed appreciation to President Adama Barrow and his government in a statement. They thanked them for ongoing collaboration and support. This support aids in advancing maritime transport development in the country.
Authorities have earlier stated that the green ferry project aims to modernise ferry infrastructure. It also seeks to improve service delivery for communities that rely heavily on river crossings.
