The United States has recalled Ambassador Richard Mills from Nigeria. This action is part of a sweeping diplomatic purge ordered by President Donald Trump. It marks an abrupt end to Mills’s tenure less than two years after his confirmation. The recall is part of a global shake-up. It affects more than two dozen American missions. Early exit signals wider diplomatic reshuffle
Ambassador Mills was confirmed in May 2024. He concluded his posting on Friday. This occurred after he received formal withdrawal notice under the December recall directive. Diplomatic sources note that while US ambassadors typically serve three to four years, this recall cut his tenure significantly short.
The recall directive targets ambassadors appointed before Trump’s second‑term realignment of American foreign policy. Nigeria is among a group of 15 African countries. State Department officials maintain that recalled ambassadors remain in the foreign service and may receive new assignments in Washington. Keith Heffern is the Deputy Chief of Mission. He now serves as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim. This is pending the appointment of a new envoy.
Africa bears the brunt of Trump’s recall
Africa is experiencing the most impact in this recall wave. Reports indicate that more than a dozen ambassadorial positions have been abruptly vacated. Foreign‑policy observers say this move signals a strategic recalibration aimed at reshaping US diplomatic posture on the continent.
Beyond Africa, countries in the Asia‑Pacific, Europe and the Western Hemisphere also saw their envoys recalled. This includes Fiji, Laos, Vietnam, Armenia, Slovakia, Guatemala, and Suriname.
