Images and a now‑deleted SANDF Facebook post suggested the Iranian corvette Naghdi participated in the sea‑phase drills.

Opposition figures say the incident raises questions about command control in the SANDF. The Democratic Alliance welcomed the inquiry but warned that delays could erode accountability. The United States has sharply criticised South Africa’s handling of the situation. The US Embassy said it was “alarmed” by reports. These reports claimed that the SANDF defied orders. The embassy accused Iran of being a destabilising actor. The naval exercise has drawn global attention. There are concerns that South Africa is deepening defence ties with Tehran. This happens at a politically sensitive moment.
