Namibia and Russia are preparing to accelerate their cooperation agreement on the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The plan forms part of a broader partnership first outlined under an existing cooperation framework between the two governments.
According to recent reporting, officials from both countries have discussed speeding up the implementation of their joint programme. Areas of focus include nuclear science research, energy production, medical applications and skills development. Namibia sees nuclear energy as a long‑term choice for strengthening its power mix and supporting future industrial expansion. Russia has positioned itself as a key partner for nuclear training, technology transfer and regulatory assistance.
The cooperation discussions come as several African states continue to explore civilian nuclear energy. They aim for electricity generation, health services, and scientific development. Russian officials have signalled their intention to deepen technical partnerships across the continent, offering training, equipment and institutional support. For Namibia, current talks emphasise regulatory readiness and building local skills before major nuclear infrastructure is considered.
