South Africa’s richest man, Johann Rupert, is now closer than ever to reaching a net worth of $20 billion. He ended 2025 with a valuation of $19.7 billion, placing him only $300 million away from the milestone.
Rupert began 2025 with a net worth of $13.7 billion. By year end, he had gained $5.4 billion, making him the best performing African billionaire of the year. His luxury goods company, Richemont, recorded strong growth, including $12.33 billion in half year sales driven by rising jewellery demand.
Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index placed Rupert at $19.1 billion in December 2025. His current net worth has since risen to $19.7 billion. The index shows a recent gain of $241 million and a year-to-date increase of $189 million.
Aliko Dangote remains Africa’s richest person with a stable valuation of $30 billion. His net worth grew by $1.9 billion in 2025, although his rate of growth was lower than Rupert’s.
Rupert’s rapid gains highlight a shift in Africa’s billionaire landscape. Dangote continues to lead. However, Rupert’s surge reflects strong performance in luxury goods markets. It demonstrates global demand for high end products. He remains positioned to become Africa’s next $20 billion billionaire.
